THE TURRE OPEN PAIRS 2025
Rules
World Bowls Rules will apply IF not covered below.
This competition will take the form of a Round Robin and any combination of pairs may enter provided they have some form of FAB membership or are members of an affiliated bowls association.
- Each group match will consist of 7 ends.
- Matches will be played on dates and times specified.
- Because of time constraints on group matches, the jack may be cast and set as soon as the teams are ready and a bell will be rung to commence play. The bell will be rung again 55 minutes after the starting bell. For an end to be allowed to be completed, the first jack MUST be cast before the 55 minute bell rings. The first jack may still be in motion and can be set BUT NOT ACTUALLY CAST after the bell has rung. Provided the first jack has been cast, that end may be played to a finish, including re-casting the jack, but no more ends can be started after that end is completed.
- Toss up for the mat at the beginning of each match.
- No visiting the head at any stage in the competition.
- No trial ends.
- A one shot maximum on the first end of each match.
- If the jack leaves the rink (not in the ditch) it will be re-spotted on the ‘T’ or as near as possible in a straight line between that T and the T at the opposite end of the rink.
- The umpire’s decision will be final if he/she is called upon during play. No appeal will be allowed.
- In the group stages, 4 points will be awarded for each match won and 2 points for a draw. One point will also be awarded for each end won.
- All group winners will automatically go into the next stage, as will any highest scoring 2nd place team if that is how the competition is set out (after adjustment of scores if necessary – see rule 18(ii) below).
- In the event of a points tie either at the top of a group table or else for any highest 2nd place finish between the groups, shot difference will decide which team goes through. If still tied, countback on ends won will come into force. If points, shot difference and ends are all tied, the two tied teams will play a one-end shootout in normal pairs format, four woods each.
- The winner of allpost-group knockout stages, including the semi-finals and the final, will be the team scoring the higher shot total. In the event of a tie, a sudden death end will be played. Ends won will NOT count in the post-group knockout stages.
- Post-group knockout matches will commence on the bell but will NOT be subject to a 55 minute bell or time limit. All other rules will remain in force.
- Score cards for every match must be signed and timed by both skips and returned immediately to the competition organiser.
- Late arrivals – group stage: If the player/pair are more than 15 minutes late for a match or advises they cannot play a particular match (and unless there has been anexpress withdrawal from the competition before that 15 minutes expires), that match will be awarded to their opponents along with 7 ends and all 11 points. The opponents shall also receive a shot difference debit orcredit for that particular match according to the average of their matches actually played. No exceptions will be made for latecomers.
- Late arrivals – knockout stage : The same 15 minute deadline will apply. The late team will be eliminated. No exceptions will be made for latecomers.
- If a pairformally withdraws after the competition has started, the following will apply:
- For a pair or pairs withdrawing from a group, any results from matches already played by the pair(s) in question will be expunged and the remaining teams will proceed as a smaller group.
- If there is a need for the organisers to allocate a semi-final place for the highest scoring 2nd place team, the final points, ends and shot differences (positive or negative) for the remaining teams in a reduced group will be proportionately adjusted according to the average final totals in that table (for example, a reduced group of five instead of six, now having four counting matches instead of five, will have a ¼ change in order to make a hypothetical five match total).
- The organisers reserve the right to amend the rules at any time if they believe it is in the interests of fairness and/or the smooth running of the competition.
